I highly recommend Zoom piano lessons with Diana, no matter the age group or experience, you will be well catered for”.

Nina – Piano Parent

Teaching piano to children to children with autism is not the same as teaching another child. There is no one piano method that works for each child as each has different and varying skills that need to be tapped into.

Children with autism gravitate towards routines, things with patterns, structure and organization. It helps them to feel calm and more in control inside a body that often struggles with those things.

Research has found that kids with ASD  have demonstrated advanced abilities in pitch categorization, memorization of melodies, and labeling of emotions in music.

When understanding emotions in a social context and within their own bodies is an issue, this can really help them feel and understand emotions in a way they can understand.

Diana gets to know each child individually, adjusting teaching methods to suit their strengths to enable them to excel through the power of music.

Many children with autism are slow to learn to read music, in fact, it can slow the process down if you solely rely on the written page.

Diana has composed songs that can be taught in patterns, presenting them in a format that appeals to a brain with autism in a natural way.

There are many benefits to learning piano for kids with ASD.

Benefits of piano lessons for children with autism include:

  • Helps with coordination
  • Assists both sides of the brain working together
  • Increased attention and concentration (research study)
  • Improved motor skills
  • Can improve vocalization, verbalization, and vocabulary (research study)
  • Enhanced auditory processing
  • Improved behavior
  • Increased auditory memory
  • Helps children to obey verbal commands (research has found that music helps children with autism to connect the auditory and motor parts of the brain which helps children with autism to understand verbal instructions more easily)
  • Can help negative behavior such as aggression, agitation and tantrums (research study)
  • Helps with understanding of emotions (research study)

  • Lessons include a variety of ways of learning
  • Parents can tend to other children in their home environment while the lesson is on
  • Location is no longer an issue – easier to find a time that suits you.
  • Children don’t have to acclimate to a strange environment my having to go to a studio
  • If your child has sound sensitivities, you can adjust the volume to one that works for your child’s needs.

Sensory Learning Through A Variety of Methods Used

Lessons are able to include a variety of methods which enhance learning, allowing the creation of lessons that suit individual learning styles for every child with ASD. These methods include:

  • Children playing
  • Educator playing (and children observing through bird’s eye camera above keyboard)
  • Online interactive games and worksheets
  • Videos to further explain musical concepts

Do I Need To Participate?

You can choose how your child does their piano lesson. You can sit in, hover in the background, or leave them to it while you organize dinner!

You don’t even have to be a child. We have many adults choosing to learn piano from the comfort of their own home and fulfilling a lifelong dream of learning to play.

The age of your child will determine the level of your involvement. if they are doing our Wunderkey Preschool program, you will need to be sitting with them every step of the way. This not only makes for a successful lesson, but also successful practice, as at that age, you also need to guide and direct their small practice sessions.

For children 7 – 8 years, you may need to hover around to assist if necessary but the amount you will be needed depends on the ability of your child.

What Type of Music Will I Learn?

We use fantastic books that cater for young children, teens, and adults. Our teenage boys love our comic style books, our adults love the range of music including Celtic inspired songs, and young children love the colorful pages of our lesson books.

Our great sounding songs will have your child wanting to practice!
